Business Days vs Calendar Days: What's the Difference?
When you receive a deadline like "delivery within 5 days," do you know if that means business days or calendar days? This distinction can make a difference of several actual days, potentially causing you to miss important deadlines.
What Are Calendar Days?
Calendar days are simply every day on the calendar—all 365 (or 366) days of the year. This includes:
- Weekdays (Monday through Friday)
- Weekends (Saturday and Sunday)
- All holidays
When someone says "7 calendar days from today," they literally mean one week from now, regardless of holidays or weekends.
What Are Business Days?
Business days (also called working days) typically include only the days when most businesses are open:
- Monday through Friday
- Excluding federal and bank holidays
So "5 business days" usually means about 7 calendar days, or more if holidays fall within that period.
Real-World Example
Let's say today is Friday, December 15th, and you're told a package will arrive in "3 days":
